Capture and life
|
Narnia was captured near Reineke Island by LLC «Sochi Dolphinarium». Because of the company's name, many people thought that Narnia will be displayed at Sochi Dolphinarium during Olympic Games.
Entire 2013 Narnia stayed in a sea pen sized 10x10 meters in Vladivostok. All information we had then were only rumors, we had no photos until July 2013, when Russian activists accidentally found photos of Narnia on the page of Narnia's trainer - Valery Derevschikov, who is still working with the whales in Moscow. In October 2013 new orcas arrived: they refused food, but Narnia forced them to eat and made the whales doing it by themselves. The same case was described in the book “Orca: The Whale Called Killer”: transient (mammal-eating) male Charlie Chin T1 started to eat and persuaded another female to do the same after two months of refusing food. In December 2013 mass media reported about Narnia and her companion Nord being transported to Moscow on a plane with a stopover in Krasnoyarsk. They were transported so early, because in TINRO Narnia showed signs of suffering from the cold as the pen was too small for her to move enough and warm up. |
Arrival to Moscow
|
After arrival, Narnia and Nord lived in temporary tanks on territory of All-Russia Exhibition Center, Moscow. At first workers of the Center denied the presence of killer whales here, claiming that in the tanks are either building materials, or a water treatment plant. In August 2014 animal rights activists submitted an application to the prosecutor to check whale' conditions. After police released a report, a big wave of negative was sent to the Center's administration, many mass-media were interested in these news. But All-Russia Exhibition Center posted photos and videos of the orcas, carefully trying not to shoot their environment - little rusty tank; and most part of society, sadly, calmed down.
As it written in a police report, orcas were under constant strict veterinary control, which is carried out by seven qualified veterinarians and five special trainers. Allegedly, orcas are in "specialized pools, with installed powerful equipment for the preparation of water, filtration systems with multiple exchanges of water and a modern station for monitoring water condition". (To trust that or not is a difficult question: it would be too hard to build such water cleaning systems so far from the sea or ocean). Also, despite Narnia is transient, her diet, developed by veterinarians individually based on her condition, consists of 12 species of fish. Access to the territory with orcas allowed only to specialists (veterinarians, trainers) because of the “strict adherence to bacterial and epidemiological regime” of orca. |
"Welcome" to Moscvarium |
In first half of December, Narnia and Nord were transferred to their final location - Moscvarium. Orcas are being used in the "cultural, educational" and entertainment purposes". First show planned to begin in July 2015.
Both, Narnia and Nord, had met with the third killer whale here - young female Juliet. As the oldest in the pod, Narnia takes care of her. |
